At Menade, we are happy and proud to help mitigate or reduce the carbon footprint in our wine production.
We decided to participate in the Carbon Footprint, Compensation, and Absorption Projects Registry of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), which collects the efforts of Spanish organizations in calculating and reducing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by their activity.
All registered footprints must be accompanied by a reduction plan, and they are checked before being registered. When it is recognized that an organization has reduced its footprint, it is because it meets strict criteria demonstrating a decreasing trend in emissions.
In 2022, we reached 30.70 tons, and by studying the ratios of previous years, we have achieved a reduction in greenhouse gases of more than 22% compared to 2019. This means that, little by little, we are on the right track to achieving zero carbon footprint at Menade.
But what exactly is a carbon footprint? It is the “total amount of greenhouse gases emitted directly or indirectly by an individual, organization, event, or product.”
Initially, the calculation of the carbon footprint is the product of the activity data and the emission factor. The activity data is the parameter that defines the degree or level of the activity generating the GHG emissions. The emission factor is the amount of GHG emitted per unit of the “activity data” parameter. These factors vary depending on the activity.
The main objective of the report is the calculation and registration of the organization’s carbon footprint in the MITECO Registry for the year 2022. To achieve this, the CO2 equivalent emissions of the company’s activity in the year under study are calculated, and the appropriate voluntary actions to combat climate change are analyzed.
Promoting biodiversity in the vineyard, using natural care for the vine—such as ozone or aromatic plant infusions, using lightweight bottles, and installing photovoltaic panels on the winery roof for electricity supply—are some of these actions.
For this study, the main sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the organization have been identified. This provides a balance of emissions from the organization’s activities. Quantifying this impact allows us to be aware of the activity’s impact on global warming, making the carbon footprint a valuable tool for action and awareness.
